Meet Pepper! Pepper is a robot that is being introduced to the Japanese market through the mobile phone company SoftBank in a joint partnership with the French robotics company Aldebaran. When I first met Pepper it, she, was singing/lip syncing a song by a a Japanese comedian. When I interacted with it, Pepper thought I was nervous, and maybe I was a little. It was the first time I was talking to a robot. It did recognize that I wasn't Japanese, and asked if I was from Hawaii. Pepper was funny, cute, and adorable. The only issue I had was that she spoke in Japanese so I missed a few things. I'm sure she will speak many languages when it's released next year. The company that developed Pepper, Aldebaran, has another robot named Nao that speaks 19 languages. Pepper will be connected to the internet and will continue to learn and adapt with its Artificial Intelligence (AI)! It has so many possibilities! And at right around $2000 the price is relatively reasonable! It's being sold through a mobile phone company so I'm sure there will be a monthly service fee to help offset the cost.
Aldebaran believes that, just as Steve Jobs did with the PC, there will be a robot in every household. And after interacting with Pepper I can see that vision becoming a reality.
