Here is a little more about him:
"I've been creating the imaginary world within my mind ever since I was a child. My vision is like a dream, where it's a sweet dream, a nightmare or just a bizarre dream. I try to see what's really going on in my mind and that's a practice to increase my awareness in stream-of-conscious creativity. I try not to label or think about what is supposed to be, just take it in as it is and paint whatever I see in my mind with no compromise. That way, I create my own vision."
Naoto Hattori was born in 1975 in Yokohama Japan. He studied Graphic Design in bustling Tokyo before moving to New York in the late 90's to study illustration at the School of Visual Arts in New York. In 1997 he showed at The New York Directors Club Spring Exhibition "Motion in pictures". The following year in he won The Society of Illustrators Annual Scholarship Competition as well as a spot in The New York Directors Club Spring Exhibition "The picture frame". In 2000 He received his BFA in illustration while graduating with honors.
As well as previous exhibitions at Copro Gallery, he has also shown at Fuse Gallery and Gallery 1988 here in in Los Angeles. Hattori been published in Juxtapoz magazine as well as many other publications. He has done CD cover, book jacket, posters, flyers, skateboards and snowboard design.
Inspired by masters Jan van Eyck, and William-Adolphe Bouguereau, Hattori brings pop surrealist portraiture to life. In "Mind Portrait", his current show at the Copro Gallery, there are three pieces that I am immediately drawn to:
The work features the skull of an old Japanese woman's in her traditional kimono complete with flying saucers hovering in the calm sky.
Perhaps I am obsessed with Scarlett Johansson but there seems to be some kind of resemblance.
Reminds me somewhat of the Opera singer in the movie "The Fifth Element". I love the smooth porcelain face that is then contrasted with the architecture of the hair.
Prices for his work at the "Mind Portrait" show range between $1000 - $4000.
